Before you check: Read How to Check RV Towing Limits. This screening tool cannot replace exact vehicle labels, manuals, scale weights or qualified professional advice.

RV Decision Tool

Start with a Quick Tow Screen

Identify the tow vehicle, enter a few numbers from its labels and add the RV you are considering. We will show the likely limiting factor and what still needs verification.

1. Identify vehicle2. Add your load3. Add the RV4. See the screen
1. Identify the tow vehicle

Usually visible through the windshield or on the driver-door label.

The VIN is sent directly to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s NHTSA decoder. RV Decision does not save it.
Do not have the VIN? Enter the vehicle manually

Include cab, bed, drivetrain, engine, axle ratio and tow package when known.

lb

Look for: “The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed…”

lb

Use the rating for this exact configuration from the manufacturer.

Why are these two numbers still needed? A VIN identifies the vehicle, but public VIN data does not reliably include its as-built payload and towing limits. The door label and manufacturer source remain the safest references.

2. Add the load carried by the vehicle
lb

Include everything added to the vehicle before the trailer presses on the hitch.

Quick estimate: Add the weight of occupants, pets, cargo, the hitch or ball mount and aftermarket accessories. The calculator adds the trailer’s tongue or pin weight next.

3. Add the RV you are considering

We will search current dealer inventory and show up to six possible matches.

Inventory data can identify an RV and sometimes provide GVWR. Always verify every rating on the RV label or manufacturer specifications.

Optional. Leave blank to use trailer GVWR for a conservative screen.

lb

Optional. Leave blank and we will estimate 15% for a travel trailer or 25% for a fifth wheel.
